Bundles rarely vanish for mysterious reasons. They go on video, on automatic downloads, and on apps updating themselves in the background while the phone is in your pocket.
Find out where yours went before changing anything.
See exactly what used it
Android: Settings, Connections or Network and internet, then Data usage, then Mobile data usage. You get a list of apps, largest first, for the current period. Tap the dates at the top to line the period up with when your bundle starts.
iPhone: Settings, Mobile Service, and scroll down to the list of apps. iPhone does not reset this by itself, so scroll to the very bottom, tap Reset Statistics, and check again in a week for a clean reading.
The top of that list is your answer. It is usually one of four things.
The usual four
Not the messages. The automatic downloads. Every photo and video in every group downloads itself the moment it arrives.
Open WhatsApp, Settings, Storage and data, then Media auto-download. Set When using mobile data to No media. Do it now; it is the single biggest saving on this page.
Video that plays by itself
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X all autoplay video as you scroll. An evening of scrolling can cost several hundred megabytes without you watching anything on purpose.
- Facebook: Settings, Media, set videos to never autoplay.
- Instagram: Settings, Data usage, turn on Use less mobile data.
- TikTok: Settings, Data Saver, on.
- YouTube: Settings, Video quality preferences, set mobile networks to Data saver.
App updates
The Play Store will happily spend 800MB updating apps you never open.
Open the Play Store, tap your picture, Settings, Network preferences, Auto-update apps, and choose Over Wi-Fi only. On iPhone: Settings, App Store, and switch off Automatic Downloads for mobile data.
Backups running on mobile data
Google Photos or iCloud uploading a holiday's worth of video over bundle is expensive and silent. In Google Photos: profile picture, Photos settings, Backup, Mobile data usage, and set photos and videos to zero, meaning Wi-Fi only.
Then put a fence around it
Once the big four are handled, set a limit so a surprise cannot happen again.
Android: Settings, Data usage, Billing cycle or Data warning and limit. Set the cycle day to match your bundle, then set a warning and a hard limit. The phone cuts mobile data off at the limit rather than letting it run.
Android Data Saver (in the same area) stops apps using data in the background entirely, except the ones you allow. It is blunt and it works.
iPhone Low Data Mode: Settings, Mobile Service, Mobile Data Options, Data Mode, then Low Data Mode.
Two things that are not what people think
- Hotspot. When you share your connection with a laptop, the laptop's updates and cloud sync come out of your bundle, and a Windows update is measured in gigabytes. If your bundle disappeared the day you tethered a computer, that is where it went.
- Night bundles and free zones. Cheap night bundles only cover certain hours. Anything running at 6:01am is on your main balance. If the phone is backing up at dawn, that is what happened.
If you are uploading documents to a portal on bundle, making the files smaller before you upload is real money saved, not just convenience.
