What is COVID-19?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus.

The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are unwell.

Signs and Symptoms

The viruses can make people sick. Coronavirus symptoms include;

Fever
A runny nose
Cough
Sore throat
Possibly a headache

Prevention

There is no vaccine to protect against COVID-19

Reduce your risk of infection by:

  • Washing your hands with soap and water before touching anything including your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
  • Disinfecting the objects and surfaces you touch.
  • If you are sick, staying home and avoiding crowds and contact with others.

Treatment

  • There is no specific treatment. Most of the time, symptoms will go away on their own.
  • Health experts can relieve symptoms by prescribing a pain or fever medication.
  • A room humidifier or a hot shower can help with a sore throat or cough.
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Get rest and sleep as much as possible.
  • If symptoms feel worse than a standard cold, see your doctor
